Interview with Magda Butrym
“My design philosophy is centred on achieving a balance of timeless elegance, strong femininity and modern versatility.”

For Magda Butrym, everything begins with the rose —a symbol of romance and strength. Already beloved for her dreamy and romantic Slavic infused designs, Magda’s eponymous label debuted at Paris Fashion Week this autumn with an intimate salon show. Now, in her H&M collaboration, she explores the interplay of feminine and masculine energy through precise tailoring and thoughtful design.

When did your interest in fashion begin?

It began at a young age, although my journey has not been very straightforward. Growing up in Poland, I was surrounded by strong visual influences that ignited my fascination with art, culture and design. Although my family wasn’t particularly focused on fashion, I was consistently captivated by how clothing can transform perceptions and reflect individual personalities.

What does fashion mean to you?

For me, fashion serves as an extension of my taste, blending timeless elements with a modern sensibility. It’s about creating pieces that not only look beautiful but also push boundaries and stand the test of time.

What motivated you to start your own label?

The decision to launch my brand was driven by a need for independence. By combining my interests in art, history and design, I can experiment with these influences to create pieces that are not only wearable but also emotionally resonant. Fashion is never just about clothing. It’s about creating something that resembles a piece of art, allowing people to connect with it, express themselves through it and truly make it their own.

How would you describe your design philosophy?

I strive to create pieces that are both emotional and enduring—designs that not only withstand the test of time in terms of quality but also establish a lasting connection with the person. I aim to blend softness with strength, crafting designs that are inherently feminine yet possess a certain toughness and structure, imparting power and presence.

Craftsmanship is at the core of my work, and I have a deep respect for traditional techniques. My goal is to create pieces that feel both classic and contemporary, mixing delicate fabrics with bold, structured elements such as sharp silhouettes and oversized tailoring. I seek to maintain a balance that enhances personality while remaining grounded in authenticity.

Ultimately, I design with purpose, creating garments that empower women and instil a sense of confidence and timelessness. My work explores contrasts, romantic yet structured, delicate yet strong, reflecting my personal taste and a profound connection to the art of fashion.

What was it like collaborating with H&M?

This collaboration was an incredibly creatively fulfilling experience — an opportunity to bring my signature aesthetic, defined by romanticism, intricate details, and a bold sense of femininity, into designs that are both wearable and accessible. Staying true to my design philosophy was essential. I wanted every piece to reflect the essence of my work.

One of the most exciting aspects was introducing my designs to a new audience — customers who may not have had access to my mainline collections before. Craftsmanship remained a top priority, and working closely with the welcoming H&M team, we ensured that each piece was crafted from high-quality materials that honour the spirit of my brand within a more affordable context.

Overall, this collaboration allowed me to experiment with my designs in a fresh way by bringing my signature blend of classic-meets-modern elegance, femininity, and meticulous detailing to a wider and more diverse audience — all without ever compromising on what makes my work unique.

There is an interplay of feminine and masculine in the collection.

What do these concepts mean to you?

The interplay of feminine and masculine in this collection represents a balanced exploration of contrasts, which has always been at the heart of my design philosophy. Fashion, to me, is a fluid language where softness and strength, delicacy and toughness, can exist side by side and enhance each other.

When I think of femininity, it’s not just about softness or fragility, it is about the power of expressing one's identity with confidence. It's about standing tall in garments that are elegant but also assertive.

Masculinity, in my designs, isn't just about tailoring or structure, it's about embracing boldness, authority and raw energy. It’s about giving strength to clothing without sacrificing the graceful, sensual side of the one who wears them.

In this collection, I have consciously blended masculine elements like sharp tailoring, oversized coats and strong silhouettes with the more fluid and romantic touches, ruffled dresses and floral motifs. This creates a visual dialogue that empowers women to embrace both sides of themselves: the softer, more romantic elements that reflect femininity, as well as the sharper, more structured pieces that convey strength and independence. Ultimately, it’s about creating clothes that empower women in all their complexity.

I want the pieces to make women feel not just beautiful, but strong and unapologetically themselves, embracing the full spectrum of who they are. This balance between femininity and masculinity gives the collection depth, allowing the designs to evolve, reflecting the person’s moods and personal expression. It’s my belief that clothing should never be one-dimensional. This collection captures that essence.

Why the rose?

For me, the rose is much more than just a flower—a motif. The rose is a woman, a Slavic woman. It’s a deeply personal symbol that represents the multifaceted nature of womanhood. The rose embodies both softness, protection and strength, which are qualities I strive to capture in my designs. It’s a symbol of love, romance but also growth, elegance and resilience, and it perfectly reflects my design philosophy.

The rose has a timeless, romantic quality that resonates with my love for craftsmanship and attention to detail. I use it in many ways across my collections, whether as a graphic print, a delicate embellishment or even as a structural element.

It’s a visual metaphor for the complexity and depth I aim to convey through my pieces, blending romantic elements with strong, bold shapes to create a narrative of transformation and beauty. The rose has become one of my signatures. It is a starting point for every collection, dreamy, Slavic, romantic. It allows me to continually explore themes of femininity and elegance while giving them a modern twist. It’s an ongoing source of inspiration, enabling me to experiment with different interpretations while staying true to the core essence of my aesthetic.
